Only the very rich can afford it
This is the most common misconception so we must tackle it first. There are many different types and sizes of private jets, each with its own capacity and operating cost. Starting from a helicopter that can carry up to 5 passengers, going through small cabin jets, like the Citation Jet Series, that have a capacity of 6 to 8 passengers and mid-size cabin jets which can accommodate from 7 to 9 passengers and heavy cabin jets which carry up to 16 passengers. Ultra long range jets can reach a capacity of 19 passengers. Each jet has its own operating cost which affects its price but the prices of renting a private charter ranges from $1000 to $8500 per flight hour, depending on the size and type of the private jet and the distance travelled. As a matter of fact, some private jets have low operating costs thanks to good fuel efficiency, and have made flying privately much more affordable.

An average light jet has a range that goes up to 3,400 km, can carry from 6 to 8 passengers and costs from $2,100 to $2,800 per flight hour. This jet can make a trip from New York to Mexico City nonstop. The average business class ticket price from New York to Mexico City ranges from $800 to $1,200 per person. The trip is about 5 hours long so a family or group of 8 could travel on a private jet from New York to Mexico City for $10,000 to $14,000. The same family or group would pay from $6,500 to $10,000 for business class tickets on a commercial jet.

Private jets can only travel for short distances

Another common misconception about flying on a private aircraft is that they can only be used for short trips and must make a landing to refuel during long flights. Different jet sizes have different ranges. Small Cabin Jets are suitable for short trips, Midsize and Super Midsize Cabin Jets would be an excellent choice for domestic trips and large and heavy Cabin Jets are ideal for international flights. Ultra long range jets, particularly the Bombardier 8000 which has the longest range in private jets, can travel up to 14,631 kilometers nonstop; that’s the more than the distance between Beirut, Lebanon and Sydney, Australia. That is an impressive range, even if compared to that of aircrafts used for commercial flights; the longest range Boeing aircraft is the 777-200LR Worldliner which can fly up to 15,843 km before having to land and refuel.

Private jets are only for emergencies

Most people imagine that private jets are only used for emergencies, very important trips and urgent meetings. But thanks to the services provided by private aviation companies, a lot of travelers choosing to fly privately pick it as an option for most of their domestic and international trips. Preferring to travel in luxury with the added benefits of saving time, requiring less planning and choosing the increasingly affordable option.

Commercial flying is faster
With a very wide variety of private charters, there are many speed variations; some private jets are actually much faster than commercial planes. If you also add the time spent at the airport finishing paperwork and having to arrive at the airport 4 hours before a flight, then commercial flying unquestionably takes up a lot more time. Private aviation companies also research the regulations and custom information of your destination as well, telling you exactly what you need to do and taking you directly to the customs’ officials. That would certainly save you even more time upon your arrival.

You can’t find private jets anywhere
Movies have painted a picture of private jets taking off and landing in secluded airports in the middle of nowhere. There are many private jet airports in most big cities but private jets use the same airports as commercial planes too. However, they usually have their own hanger somewhere away from the common, busy passenger terminal where the commercial airplanes are.

Private aviation has made travelling easy and enjoyable. It has become just as easy as arranging an Uber ride, in an airplane. So instead of dreading paperwork, customs and long lines, you would only look forward to the fun of traveling.
